Sofi is built upon original research on measuring rapid technological change conducted at Harvard Business School in 1985 led by Phillip Cousins and Diane Downs. From its start, every aspect of the system has been field developed and tested with executives working on mission critical programs and projects.

The research design utilized the methodology of Chris Argyris, thought leader in action science and organizational learning at Harvard University. Sofi also incorporates Harvard research methods from Roger Fisher - Principled Negotiation, Howard Gardner - Multiple IQ Theory, David Perkins - Learnable Intelligence and Mental Modeling, and Anthony Oettinger - Information Mapping.

Sofi also incorporates Harvard research from the Business School, Kennedy School of Government, the Law School, the Graduate School of Education and the Sloane School at MIT.
